“Find a Mentor” Tip From Patrick Barnett

If you’re in a startup phase, one of the best things you can do is find a mentor.   Often underutilized by entrepreneurs, they can be invaluable to a new business owner.

A mentor with years of experience in your field can make the difference between success and failure.  This is important because you need an outside and unbiased opinion.  Someone that can look into the lens of your business and see things that you simply do not –  whether it be validating your idea or your overall marketing strategy.

Without a mentor,  often as business owners, we see only what we want to see or can be clouded by our own egos.

With a mentor, you can tap into years of experience and learn  what to do from the beginning and most importantly fatal mistakes to avoid.  As a business, you simply will not be strong in all areas of your business.  A mentor can help you with those weak spots.

A mentor can be someone you can lean on during the inevitable roughstages and someone that can keep you motivated during those challenging times.

Building a relationship with a mentor can be a great way to gain access to their network allowing you to make connections and potential leads.

Often mentors can be found for free with the wealth of entrepreneurial support organizations available to startups. SCORE is one such example.  They offer free counseling and they have a diverse background of mentors – from franchising to e-commerce.

Just keep in mind that you might have to try out a few mentors before you find the right match for you and your business.
